Haven Volunteer Training

If you have the desire and capacity to listen compassionately to someone speak about their grief you can become a Haven volunteer. All Haven volunteers are required to attend a 30-hour training program, commit to answering incoming telephone calls for 2 1/2 hours per week for a year, and attend two additional sessions relevant to our work each year.  Volunteering at Haven involves more than just speaking to callers on the phone.  Haven volunteers commit to supporting a grieving person with individual help, and assisting with our workshops, support groups and presentations.

Steps to Becoming a Haven Volunteer

 

  • Attend an Orientation Meeting.  The Orientation Meeting acquaints potential volunteers with Haven’s mission and purpose and volunteer duties.  An Orientation Meeting can be scheduled at your convenience.
  • Complete an Application and provide three references with reference names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses.  (Using email helps speed up the volunteer screening and approval process.)
  • Have a personal interview with a Haven staff member.
  • Attend a two-week 30-hour training course (Monday, Wednesday, Friday for two consecutive weeks.)
  • Commit to one year of service on the phones at Haven.  (A minimum of 2 1/2 hours weekly – Monday through Friday during the hours of 9:30 am to 12:00 noon or 12:00 noon to 2:30 pm.)
  • Attend in-services, presentations, workshops at Haven which will be helpful to you on the subjects relevant to our work.
